I'm Andy Oldham, a retired Met Police Inspector. I left policing in 2023 after 30 years and I now bring that experience and expertise to help film and TV productions portray policing more authentically, while maintaining the drama!

What policing experience do you bring to a production?

Accepted Answer

I spent years doing the job, in many roles including response policing, control rooms, search teams and firearms. That experience helps me advise on more than procedure: how officers speak to each other, how they make decisions under pressure, and what police work looks like when nobody’s delivering a dramatic speech. Those details are often what make a scene feel believable.

Why did you become a police advisor?

I love the business of making film and TV, especially drama.After years in policing, I wanted to put that experience to use in a different way and for me, working in film and television seemed like the ideal choice: I love a compelling story, and I know how much difference the right detail can make. I get to help productions tell the story they want to tell while making the policing feel real.

How long have you been working as a police advisor?

I set up The Police Advisor in 2021, while I was still serving as a police officer. I retired from the police in 2023, but the advisory work had already begun. So although I’m a former officer now, I didn’t wait until retirement to start working with productions.

I spent over 30 years in UK policing, starting as a volunteer Special Constable with Surrey Police in 1991. I became a full-time officer in 2004, later transferred to the Metropolitan Police, and retired in 2023. That gave me experience of everything from answering 999 calls to supervising response teams and commanding firearms operations.
